Your electrical panel is the heart of your home's power system. It distributes electricity to every circuit and protects your wiring from overloads. As homes add more appliances, electronics and electric vehicles, older panels can struggle to keep up. These are the most common signs it may be time for an upgrade.
1. Frequent Breaker Trips
If breakers trip regularly when you run the microwave, air conditioner or hair dryer, your panel may not have enough capacity for your household's power demand.
2. Flickering or Dimming Lights
Lights that dim or flicker when an appliance turns on suggest the circuit is overloaded or the panel is struggling to distribute power evenly.
3. An Outdated Panel
Panels that are 30+ years old, use fuses, or are from discontinued product lines may not meet modern safety standards and should be evaluated.
4. You Are Adding Major Loads
- An EV charger requiring a dedicated circuit.
- A new air conditioner or heat pump.
- A hot tub, pool pump or tankless water heater.
- A home addition or remodel.
5. Burning Smell or Scorch Marks
A burning smell near the panel or visible scorch marks on breakers is a serious safety hazard. Turn off the main breaker and contact an electrician immediately.
6. Not Enough Circuits
If every slot in your panel is full and you need additional circuits for a remodel or new equipment, an upgrade to a larger panel may be necessary.
7. Insurance or Inspection Requirements
Some insurance companies require panel upgrades for older homes. A home inspection may also flag an outdated panel as a safety concern.
